A Book-of-the-Month Club Children's Main Selection, 2000!
The largest block in this set is more than 5" square! A friendly farmyard of animals present colors and the numbers 1 through 10 in these blocks by artist Sara Lee Anderson. Ideal for ages 2 and up. Each block gives a child opportunities to name and count colored circles, stripes, and items associated with the farm animals - for example, nine pails of milk for the cow, and ten apples for the horse. Since the blocks are open on the bottom side, a child or a parent/provider could place the number of items matching that block's featured number under the block for fun, such as three items under the block showing a "3". To practice color and number naming/matching, the correct colored number cut from construction paper could be matched to the number on each block.
For additional play, you or the child could match your own plastic animal figures to the blocks (place a "cow" next to the cow block, for instance) or place it under the corresponding block for a surprise. Do not forget the sound effects ("moo!"). Also, see if your child can place the numbers in correct ascending order (horizontally) on the floor, counting up to ten, then nest the blocks one on top of the other as you count again up to the largest block. The set includes 10 blocks which nest inside their own carrying case.
